Easy Kid Birthday Party Ideas, Part 1
On the eve of Oliver’s 1st birthday I thought I would share how I have been celebrating/decorating for birthday’s since Finn was a baby. Like every first mama I wanted a big blow-out for Finn’s first birthday. I mailed actual invitations, bought loads of decorations, had tons of food and drinks and invited a lot of people! I loved doing it and we had an absolute blast however things have changed considerably since that first year.
We still love celebrating birthdays and making them very special for the birthday boy/girl however I have learned to streamline just a bit. For instance we have cut down on the amount of people that we invite, it is usually just family and maybe 1-2 close friends. Also, instead of creating, printing and sending out invitations I actually just sent everyone a text message (I know, I know super lame but efficient). The decorations that I use are the ones I have had since Finn turned 1. When he turned one I stuck with a simple theme that I figured could grow with him. I used a lot of black and white, burlap, and chalkboard decor. I was really happy with how the decor turned out at his first birthday and an added bonus is that I have been able to reuse everything from that first year over and over.
I loved the idea of having a chalkboard table runner that all his guests could sign and wish him a happy birthday.
The burlap banners that I have were made by my sister years ago. Then I purchased some large black stick on letters from Michaels and then created the birthday banner. I did have a extra squares so I stenciled on the black stars.
(Sorry for the blurry pic)
One of my favorite touches at a first birthday is having the month by month pictures set up. It is crazy to see how much changes on these little guys(or girls) through one year. For that I just printed out the pictures using Shutterfly and then taped them on black construction paper.
I do always try to add some fun new elements for each birthday which is usually a great bunch of balloons. Both the boys absolutely love balloons and they are cheap and definitely can jazz up any party.
Next week I will be sharing how Oliver’s 1st birthday party turns out and some of the additions we made to help make it special!
